About Jure

Jure was born on April 10,1965 in Jesenice, Slovenia. He was best known for his domination of the Race Across America (RAAM). We lost Jure in a training accident on September 24,2010 when he was hit by a car on a forest road in the mountains near his home - he was 45.

He origionally took up ultra-cycling as a way to cope with the death of his mother in 1997. Jure was part of the Slovenian National Cycling Team from 1988 to 1994 and was a Slovenian National Road Champion.

During his career had had about 100 total victories and over 150 podium finishes. He annually rode around 28,000 miles in training. In 2004 he set the 24 hour record by cycling a distance of 518 miles which was certified by the World Ultra-cycling Association (WUCA)

Jure first entered RAAM in 2003 where he finished second - he went on to win the race five times, in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Jure received the Sportsman of the Year award for special achievement and awards for fair play and tolerance in the sport.
